15. September 2015

Aber im Leben bin ich gut.

Was ich mir vornehme:
- Gas geben beim Nachdiplomstudium in Theologie.

Was mir dazwischenkommt:

- Ein Bäbi für mein Gottimeitli nähen.
- Sport.
- Abendessen mit der WG.
- Eine wunderschöne Beziehung.
- Arbeiten.
- Ferien machen.
- Sonstiges Zeugs schreiben.
- Bett frisch beziehen und Staub wischen.
- Trauzeugin-sein, sprich:
- Bierdeckel mit Foto bestellen.
- Liedblatt gestalten für die Trauung.
- Mails mit Gästen, die Fragen haben.

Was ich leider/dummerweise gerne verschiebe:

Sunny, Busy, Happy.

I'd say that I need a break, but when I think about it I surprisingly find that I don't.

The past two weeks have been really busy, but in a good way: Mainly I met many, many friends that I hadn't seen in a while and spent a lot of time with my family. But also: Watched dozens of short and long films at a festival for animated film nearby (Fantoche) and wrote some articles about it for my newspaper. I went to a fabulous barbecue with even a little concert at some friends' house and after that - finally! - dancing. How I enjoyed it!

I swam in Vierwaldstätter Lake - that was really cold.

I went to an art opening that was basically an underwater world made of trash. There was a funny 5-minute rock opera where the singers/actors dressed as scuba divers or sea creatures in cardboard costumes. And I broke my first veggie week and ate a sausace because it smelled delicious and it was free.

I rode on trains many times (and already paid a fortune for the tickets). I felt that although it's cooler here than in southern Laos, summer's not quite over yet. I could even wear a short skirt four times and spend a sunny hour with a friend lying in the soft green grass!

I took a hot bath. I crafted a birthday present for a friend. I had a discussion about the meaning of marriage and the end of love. I bought two new pairs of shoes. I procrastinated completing my tax declaration.

I discovered that even if we don't have fancy exotic fruit in Switzerland, we have lots of nice ingredients to make a delicious salad.

Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, carrots, corn, dry figs, an egg,
cucumbers, cashew nuts, sesame seeds...

I went back to my old/new apartment and found that my flatmates had left the message I had written when I left in January. Whether it was because they simply didn't bother to wipe the chalkboard or they really missed me so much, I don't know.

I ate at the new Japanese restaurant in my hometown - I've been waiting for that place for years! The people who run it are Japanese, for real, wow. I bought a new diary. I didn't watch TV. I wrote some job applications and I'm trying to find more jobs as a freelance journalist and maybe freelance English teacher. I ate homegrown cherry tomatoes that were warm from the sun while I danced on my parents' terrace in the middle of the day.

I love my life this way. So many happy moments. I hope it never changes.

Last Week in Paksé, Randoms

I can't believe how fast the 6 months in Laos passed. In a week from today I'll be at home, between appointments at the doctor's and the hairdresser's. Still, the past few days here brought some fun Lao life to share...

Paksé has a welcoming committee (apart from the omnipresent Tuk Tuk drivers) - she's about 40 cms tall, blonde and has a beautiful smile.

She loves Falangs! I swear, she spots white people, smiles at them and shows them around town. All the tourists love her. Josh and I call her "Schätzeli" ("Shatzeli", in his case). We were worried about her for a while; she was expecting puppies and limped badly during this time. I think she got hit by a car once. Like many dogs here, she doesn't look left and right before crossing a road... Apparently birth went well, but her owners didn't keep the puppies, telling by her teats. Schätzeli seemed to be depressed for a while... But now she looks happy again. And prettier than ever - no limping and her owners even bought her a nice red collar!

Working off my culinary to do list: I finally got to try bamboo soup. In Lao villages that's what they eat every day. Most falang don't like it. One of my coworkers told me it's because of the bamboo smell, I guess it's also because usually they add quite a bit of padek (remember, the smelly fish sauce that they put into every dish...). My friends didn't add padek, and I really liked the soup! A little spicy, quite salty, and the bamboo was nice and soft!

Another typical Lao dish I tried this week is Capun (say "capoone"). Thin rice noodles with padek, cabbage, green chilis and green beans. In Lao villages that's what they eat on special occasions. Despite the padek it tasted surprisingly good. And because it's got a similar name to the Graubünden dish "Capuns" I can even remember the name...

Today we'll go for Lab. The cold meat/intestines bits that you eat with what they call "vegetables" (salad, cabbage and a bunch of different herbs and leaves) and sticky rice.

I love it. But to be honest there's rarely a dish that I don't like, as long as I think it's safe and healthy to eat. (Which, strictly speaking, the vegetables that come with the Lab aren't, but we always go to the same place until someone gets sick...) I just love food, all the different tastes and spices and smells and textures. I didn't like the vegetable though that our staff cooked earlier this week (first it was really sour, then it stuck to my tongue, I almost couldn't swallow it without water!), and I really don't like padek, although I'm getting used to dishes that contain a hint of it.

Yesterday it was the same temperature here and in Aarau:

20min said you even got the thunderstorm that we had at night!

On Saturday I'm going to have sort of a farewell party at our local restaurant. I made the reservation in Lao, yay :) "One saao, jed muung, sao khung, because khoy pai sai pathet switzaland on sao-haa (point to calendar)". I haven't exactly counted who's going to come, but even starting to I'm easily at 20 people. It's amazing how many friends I have here, and I've only been here for 5 months or so... THANK YOU so much to everyone who was so kind to welcome me here in the Paksé Falang/Lao community! It feels like I've known you for much longer, and I will miss you a lot. And I hope to stay part of the family even when I'm back home-home.

Also doch schon was erreicht. Passend, was? Kunst?)

I'm not able to take up running again after almost 4 weeks without. Can't get myself out of bed in the morning. Rainy season's not helping. Will try again tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow. And the day after the day after tomorrow.

My new students are nice! One class of 6, one class of 12. What feels strange is that I can actually do all the stuff I planned for one lesson and don't have to postpone half of it...

You can follow me on Instagram now, too.

How could Zooey Deschanel get so annoying so quickly?

Amazing: On Google Maps you can see the triangular sunshade that I installed on the terrace of my old a.k.a. future apartment! Kinda feels like having left a footprint in the world, sigh. My life hasn't been a waste. (And, is it just me or does it look like a bikini? Perfect, huh?)

It's raining and the world outside looks grey like Switzerland on a usual day.

Spent all Sunday playing cards. So much fun! I want to battle you all, ha!

Starting to look for a job. How many compromises should I have to make, concerning income, working hours...?

Being my own knight in shining armor: Last night I woke up from a clack-clacking sound from the stack of magazines and cardboard envelopes near my bed. Turned on the light, hold on to one of my pillows, hoped for a gecko to come out... Nope. Big fat cockroach. Got rid of it easier than I expected - it hid in a plastic bag that was lying on the floor (good thing I'm rather messy...) and I could put a bucket over it that was still in my room from the sickness episode three weeks ago (again...). #theresahero, #mariahcarey, #cheesyiknow, #aretheremultiwordhashtags

Randoms.

"Like" of the Day: Alison's Brownies, which she says are "okay", but are the perfect mix of crunchy and gooey AND chocolate.

"Awesome" is part of my everyday vocabulary now. True story.

People around me are obsessed with babies. "Dadadadada" and "ooooh, yes, yes, yes, oooh you're so cute!" - it amuses me.

I'm a student in my own classroom now: Mr Keo, who is one of my Pre-Intermediate A students, is our new Lao teacher. He also thinks this is very funny :)

There are quite a lot of beautiful butterflies in Paksé. And I've got a new friend who is a hobby macro photographer, so I might be able to share pictures someday.

One of my students cried during the lesson yesterday, because the task was so difficult (it was). I was heartbroken. Then at the beginning of the next lesson, one of the students told me how much she loved my lessons. Aww.... And another student brought me banana cakes and told me I was beautiful, after I had spent the whole day secretly worrying about how fat I think I am. That's just ... awesome.
